Our mission is simple: to spread the beauty and significance of Japanese craftsmanship, one product at a time. Each piece we offer is carefully selected not only for its quality and artistry but also for the story it tells and the tradition it represents.
Traditional crafts are time-consuming, require incredible attention to detail, and often demand a high level of dedication. Today, many of these centuries-old techniques and family legacies are at risk of disappearing, as fewer people inherit the skills needed to keep them alive. This realisation inspired us to create a platform dedicated to celebrating and sharing the artistry, stories, and cultural heritage of Japanese kougei—traditional crafts—with the world. Through our store, we hope to support the artisans and ensure that these remarkable crafts continue to thrive for future generations.
Conscious Consumption
At Toraneko Shoten, we believe that less is more — especially when it comes to protecting our planet. That’s why we take a mindful, selective approach to the products we choose to offer. We carefully curate a limited range of high-quality, purposeful items, intentionally avoiding mass production to reduce unnecessary waste and overconsumption.
Every product we offer is chosen with intention and responsibility. We work closely with small-batch producers, artisans, and ethical suppliers who share our values, ensuring that what we bring into the world is made with care, respect, and a commitment to sustainability.
In line with our values, our packaging is biodegradable, compostable, or made from recycled materials. From product wraps to shipping boxes, every detail is thoughtfully considered to leave as little environmental impact as possible, just simple earth-friendly materials that return to nature when their job is done.

Gig the Shop Cat
Gigi is our beloved kanban neko (shop cat) and the real boss of Toraneko Shoten. He is a fluffy ginger cat who takes his job very seriously, personally inspecting every new arrival that comes through the door. Nothing makes it onto our shelves without passing Gigi’s quality check.
You might spot him on our Instagram from time to time too. He loves the spotlight almost as much as he loves boxes.
